Puppy & Kitten Dental Timeline – What to Expect in the First Year

Bringing home a new puppy or kitten is full of firsts, first cuddles, first checkups, and yes, first teething. While it is easy to get caught up in the cuteness, do not forget that your little companion’s dental health is developing right alongside its personality. At Bixby Animal Clinic in Long Beach, CA, our animal hospital helps pet parents stay one step ahead with a clear timeline for what to expect from your puppy or kitten’s teeth in its first year.

Weeks 2–4: Baby Teeth Start to Emerge

Just like humans, puppies and kittens are born without teeth. Around two to four weeks old, their baby teeth (also called deciduous teeth) begin to pop through. These tiny teeth help them start to wean, though they are still mostly nursing during this phase.

Weeks 5–8: Full Set of Baby Teeth

By the time it is 8 weeks old, your puppy or kitten should have a full set of baby teeth, 28 for puppies, 26 for kittens. You might notice your pet is a bit nippy during this time as it explores the world with its mouth.

Months 3–6: Teething and Adult Teeth Come In

This is when the real action starts. Between 12 and 16 weeks, baby teeth begin to fall out, making room for adult teeth. Teething can cause drooling, chewing, and even a little crankiness, kind of like a toddler cutting molars. Offer safe chew toys to ease discomfort and protect your furniture.

6 Months: Full Set of Adult Teeth

By 6 months, most pets have all their adult teeth, 42 in dogs and 30 in cats. This is the perfect time for a pet dental exam to make sure everything is aligned correctly and no baby teeth are lingering. Retained baby teeth can lead to crowding, decay, or gum issues if left untreated.

Months 6–12: Start a Dental Care Routine

Once those adult teeth are in, it is time to commit to a dental care routine. Brushing a few times a week with pet-safe toothpaste, offering dental treats, and scheduling annual teeth cleanings are essential to keeping your pet’s mouth healthy.
